I never got around to writing my own review, so here are some IG listees' reviews: Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 12:10:57 -0400 From: Sarah Pinsker Subject: Dickinson I haven't seen a set list posted from last night, and I didn't actually manage to get one, but some of the highlights for me were Nashville, World Falls, I Don't Wanna Know (in place of Thin Line), Virginia Woolf, the Cut it Out/Wish You Were Here mesh, and the new Kakadu song. Also, on Least Complicated, Emily sang "And I got you that ring but I'm still not cool" instead of "cause I never was cool", which was cute. Some of the lowlights: getting crushed up against the door in the pouring rain for 1 1/2 hours...Dickinson is going to get a nasty letter from me. They could have been handing out tickets all day (cause we were there in the rain all day). Instead, at 6 pm they started the will call lines on opposite sides of the entry line, causing mass confusion and door rushing. Everyone who had been there all day got squashed into the middle by everyone who had arrived more recently. The soundchecks were running late, so we had to stand in the crush for over an hour, even when the lightning started up (woudn't that have been pretty bad press- "2000 Indigo Girls Fans Electrocuted As Current Travelled From One Wet Body to Another".) They really did only have two options for letting us in without starting a stampede: throwing open all the doors and assuming everyone had a ticket (especially since all of our tickets had nearly disintegrated by then) and nobody had a gun, or letting us through *one at a time*, which is what they did. We got fully frisked, and we were informed that bags weren't allowed in. I told the guard that I had been in line all afternoon, and that I wasn't about to give up my place to go back to my car, but she stood firm. I asked her if it was okay if I tossed my bag into a corner, and she said yes, but she wouldn't be held responsible if it got stolen. Later, I went back and asked if I could take it in, since it had my inhaler and my water, and they told me I could take the inhaler, but not the water! Do they *want* people to faint? Anyway, I finally got the bag and the water in by saying that my pockets were drenched and I needed my tampons too- that got sympathy :) Halfway through the show, the Girls asked us if we needed water, like they did at UMBC, and had security pass cups back...sure would have been easier if they had let people bring in their water bottles. Anyway, it was a great show, I met lots of cool list people, and now I'm late for work. Sarah spinsker@goucher.edu p.s.Shawn Mullins was cool. Dave Patterson has some awesome MIDI guitar effects, like virtual banjo...I asked Shawn and he couldn't remember what type it was, but if anyone knows, I couldn't identify it- some kind of Roland unit, I think. Julie and the drummer from his band stood on risers behind the Girls during Closer to Fine and did dance moves and took pictures of the audience, which was funny. I asked Sully a question and she told me she couldn't talk right then, but she would be outside to answer it in a few minutes, but I was too cold and wet to stand outside long enough to meet her out there... Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 12:53:45 EDT From: Indigofrk Subject: Dickenson Show !!!! Hey yall So this morning I have returned home from what turned out to be not so lovely Carlisle PA. A hearty good morning to all the listees I got to meet yesterday, and a special shout out to Shannon and Bethany for lettin me hang with them in line, and to Barb and Twink for listening to me complain when the line raucous occurred and we were all shoved up against the front. So for starters I will not bitch too much about the line situation except I would like to say that the people who organized this show have obviously not done this before and did a horrible job (cept for the fact they did bring the girls there) Anyways. To start off the show, Shawn Mullins and his band were great...(except for the rude girls next to me who screamed for him to get off the stage and bring out the girls...) I was very impressed, and it was cool to see Julie and Dave performing with him... Dave was awesome and he had this cool tuner type device on his guitar much like the one Jimmy Page uses that can be programed to detune and change the sound without messing with anything on stage. ok i did have a point, at one point it was turned into a banjo and he did some awesome stuff on it. Julie was cool, saying hi to all of us who were a little outta control.. Onto the girls. Every time I see them it gets better. They were very surprised by the crowds energy and looked like they were having a good time...lots of smiles from amy and emily and lots of cute dancing gestures. I tried to tape the show (after causing a scene and getting my bag in) but my tape thingy doesnt like water, and it was so wet and decided to cut off in the middle. Did anybody else tape it ??? I saw someone else writing down the setlist, so I didnt do that either. Highlight... Lots of sing alongs and dancing songs: reunion, power of two, least complicated, get out the map, I dont wanna know, chickenman etc. Amy was so intense during cut it out/wish you were here, at the end she had this pained look on her face like she was gonna burst into tears...gotta love her... Emily was great on guitar all night, cept she messed up the galileo solo and it was real cute. After hearing the Australia boots and Amy;s new song Gone Again (still not sure of the title) I I hoped she would play it and she did...I was excited, I love that song. Sandy Garfinkle was also there to play harmonica which was a cool bonus. Ok I think I have said enough, I need a nap... Peace Sasha Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 12:59:47 -0400 From: Stephanie Strassel Subject: Dickinson review Hey, people! I don't post too often but after last night's show at Dickinson I felt compelled to. Wow. That was a killer setlist. I'm giving it from memory but I saw lots of you writing it down so someone can correct my mistakes. In no particular order: Shame on You - They opened with this one, surprise. Least Complicated - Lots of audience participation. Nashville!!! - Hearing this live was so wonderful - a first for me. It sounded great so they must have been practicing. Reunion Get Out the Map Love's Recovery World Falls - YES! I finally got to hear this live. My favorite hiking song. Cut It Out/Wish You Were Here - I love the transition between these two. Amy sounded great - her voice was so on tonight. Ghost - Beautiful as always. Unfortunately a few over-zealous fans behind us were SHOUTING along with Emily... kinda obnoxious. Don't Wanna Know - They seem to be doing this at all the shows Michelle was supposed to open for. :( Lots of people were shouting "How's Michelle?" but no answer. It's Alright Virginia Woolf - Wow, this and Ghost in the same set. Emily, you're amazing. Galileo - mega-hyper audience participation on this one. Yikes. I couldn't hear the Girls at all. Chickenman - With dueling harmonicas. Sandy Garfinkle was up there (sounding great; he joined in on Nashville and a few others too) along with Dave Ellison. Gone Again - I love it! Amy said they were still working out the kinks in this one but it sounded excellent to me. Closer To Fine - Shawn Mullins and co. joining it, with Julie and the drummer doing a funny dance with tambourines, and Julie taking photos of the audience. OK, did I forget anything? We waited in the pouring, freezing rain for 6-1/2 hrs. I never knew I could be that wet. Lots of nice people in line though (especially Andi and Jess and Jen :)) passing out pizza and cupcakes and smiles. We got to hear a short sound check - all I caught was Three Hits. Very late, too - they didn't start it until 5:30 or so. But I have to say I've never seen a more poorly organized event. It was truly dangerous. Sarah told you all about the fiasco getting the tickets and getting in to the show. So after that awful experience we (Andi, Jess, Jen and me plus the nice cupcake people in front of us, plus Joy and Justinee and Jude - hey all you "J" name people, what's up?) were happy to manage to be in the front. Shawn Mullins (w/ Dave & Julie from Lift) opened. I've never heard him before but I was impressed. And Dave can play one mean guitar. We were pretty much packed in like sardines at the front there. When we first got in we were all wet and freezing (lots of people were buying shirts just to have something dry to put on!) but after a while it got incredibly hot and humid in there. The steam rising off our bodies was amazing - like special effects. Thank you Girls for passing out water - we needed it badly. Amy & Emily seemed pretty happy even at the start of the show but the crowd really seemed to energize them. They said several times over how unexpected the crowd's enthusiasm was - Amy said "You're like a Saturday night crowd." A few songs into it Amy started chewing on her fingernails and said "I've already broken two nails. That's pretty good. For us, not you." Oh, I like it when they're happy. It was a great show for me. Just about a perfect setlist, just the two of them onstage, and their voices were really really on. The audience was pretty cool (except for some extremely drunk people behind me, and the over-enthusiastic singing at inappropriate moments and high-pitched screaming at every possible opportunity). Afterwards, Sulli went wild tossing out many many picks (alas, none for me). Then a small crowd (maybe 20 people) waited outside by the bus and got big smiles and waves from Emily and Amy getting on the bus, but no autographs. Oh, and no fashion report - they have worn the same thing every time I've seen them in the past year and a half. So THANK YOU to the nice, soggy people who made waiting in the cold rain all day more enjoyable. It was well worth it. And I know at least 2 of you were booting the show... And THANK YOU and many apologies to Andi & Jen & Jess for getting lost on the way home AGAIN - it seems to be my destiny to get lost on the way home from IG shows. (But Jen, I have your pick. It didn't get sucked up by the vacuum cleaner...) Stephanie Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 14:35:26 EDT From: Jill Chambers Subject: dickenson!!!!!!!! hi :) the concert was awesome! yeah, the problems with the lines was annoying to say the least, but by the time i got to the line from where i parked my car, i was thoroughly soaked so another hour in the rain didn't really matter all that much. this was the weekend from *hell* anyway so i wasn't at all surprised that we had to stand around in the rain, but i got to see ig so it's all good :) i didn't hear much of the opening dude cuz i had to go looking for 2 of my friends cuz they were lost, but then i found them :) the girls were great. they were smiling and laughing and dancing around and, of course, sounded wonderful. they seemed much more into it than at the last concert i went to. it was cool. they played a good mix of songs from all of the albums... i think it was all of them, anyway. the highlight for me was world falls cuz that is my favoritest ig song. the harmonica solo in chickenman was good and short. amy was really intense in cut it out/wish you were here... looked like she was gonna cry afterwards, from where i was standing, anyway. please please please somebody tell me they booted it. one of my friends didn't come cuz she's seen the girls sooo many times already. i don't know about you all, but i don't ever think i will get tired of seeing them! :) later, ~jill Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 16:50:07 -0400 From: carolyn e turett Subject: dickinson ok, my 2 cents on this show...yeah, jill had to find me and my girlfriend, who had to go back to the car (twice actually) to put shit in there, so i missed the openers as well. for a good while we were just standing there, losing all hope of ever finding them. it wasn't till the end of the show that i started finding people...bethany (and shannon from a distance), sasha (nice shirt), sarah, and other cool folks as well. i got a pick, or rather a friend got two and gave me one, and that was very cool. oh, the setlist as i have written is this (a tad different from the posted one): shame on you, least comp, nashville, get out the map, shed your skin, power of two, reunion, love's recovery, world falls, it's alright, chickenman, virginia woolf, i don't wanna know, cut it out/wish you were here, galileo, ghost, gona again, closer to fine all in all it was fabulous, though the line thing and wetness (i think that my feet will never be the same) were bad, and the whole deal with not being able to bring in anything was bad. amy and emily were on from the start, and i was very impressed. amy was really into every song, and i know that people mentioned how it looked like she was gonna cry. the lighting was very well done...i swear that at a few points it made them both look like saints...i really liked it. i liked how the girls kept saying that OUR singing was on, and how we energized them...it was nice. and i never had problems hearing....we were on emily's side fairly close...though i had a really good view of both of them. we had a few signs among us, and they were cool. i think that amy saw her happy belated bday sign during shame on you, but she really acknowledged it during least complicated, which was cool :) the kazoo sign...they both saw it, and both pointed, and later were whispering to eachother and pointing in our direction, but in the end shawn mullins and everybody came out and we didn't get to go up :( but it was still very cool. i think that they got a kick out of it. i played the kazoo anyway...just >from where i was. :) i was psyched to hear nashville...a surprise, and i nearly peed myself during ghost. anyways, it was awesome :) carolyn <*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*> THE BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN TO ME: Be brave, be proud, and no matter what shit people give you, know that at least you have the strength to live your life true to yourself. ~~ my friend Jen (BLAZE!!) <*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*> Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 18:11:28 -0400 From: Leigh Ann Davidson Subject: Dickinson What an awesome show!!!!!! The whole thing was poorly managed on the part of the college. Andy (the security guy) told Don that this was the first concert like this that they'd ever had. We tried to find out who to write to, in order to complain about the way things went outside before the show... but Andy didn't know much & his suggestion was to complain to the record store. But I still got the impression the record store had no idea that Dickinson wasn't going to come thru with the tickets and that they were pretty ticked off about that too. Thanks to Don Richards for all the pizza & hot chocolate & coffee... heck, it was even good hours later when it was cold & somewhat waterlogged! Thanks to Katherine for deciding to get that tarp... don't think we'd have lasted all day out there without it! Hey to Heather (so great to finally meet ya!), Alison, Jen, Sasha, Bethany, Deb, Joellen (who I bumped into at the hotel the night before the show)... and everyone else I probably met & don't remember! Special thanks to whoever it was that had the boom box... that kept us from being totally bored, soaked, and cold all day. This way we were singing, soaked, and cold! The weather on the drive there & back was BEAUTIFUL... which made the rain & cold while waiting in line even worse! I'm getting way too old for this... the crush of the crowd was totally out of control & I was worried that someone was gonna be seriously hurt. I didn't get there until six, when I got out of my car, it didn't seem like I'd need my umbrella. LOL! I thought it was mass confusion, poor planning and I am really upset about Jill and Lizzy! Jill: what was the last thing I said to you? BE CAREFUL. yeah well, I am so glad you two are alive and safe. I never did get to meet any listees, I asked everyone I saw if they were listees and was greeted with weird stares. I was in the middle, I couldn't believe they opened only one door, during lightning even and the proceeded to frisk us. Like Indigo Girl fans are gonna carry guns. Yeah right. So I sat by my lonesome, soaked to the bone, cold (shivering) through out the concert which was the best I have seen so far! My sign got water logged, it said "AMY-EMILY" I am missing x-files for you-for me, so Please pick me to Sing! But it was so wet that I am sure they couldn't read it. I thought they were better than ever and when Amy said "wow, I broke 2 fingernails, its a great show" it made her seem so "human" It was a riot when she hitched up her pants. I thought Emily looked like she has lost weight since I saw them at Bethlehem in the fall, she looked great. One question: Does Amy wear the same shirt at every concert? She has had the same one on at all the concerts I've been too! I broke down and bought Under Devil Moon (MM) it is so awesome! All you Michele Malone fans, I know why you lover her music now. Gotta run, time to do payroll. Love Karen PS, my tie die IG shirt was covered by the new shirt I had to buy to keep me warm. Next concert, I wanna meet you all! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 23:15:41 EDT From: FAUNA88 Subject: my bit on dickinson and then some Okay, so i guess i won't spend paragraphs and paragraphs complaining about the horrendous conditions of the dickinson concert (although as i waited in the thunder/lightning storm for hours, wedged between billions of people, i thought of all the clever, obnoxious things i could write to the list about this) but i will say, in short, that it was the best setlist i've ever heard them do (and may i repeat that when amy turned around and did a little hop to pull up her pants, was quite a moment?) Inside the gym it was so wet from the sopping-wet people, that instead of the usual security guards saying Don't run, or we'll kick you out - it was more like, Don't run, or you'll slip and die. In front of the stage i was (once again) WEDGED somewhere around the 2nd or 3rd row, smack in the middle between a and e. The, er, so-called fans to my right were the most obnoxious girls i've ever encountered, smoking butt after butt and making out so much that i couldn't even see what was happening. Don't think it was any of y'all, but if it was, i'd still like to reprimand you... NOW, was security and their wonderful frisking so tough that NO one managed to boot the concert??? that would be a shame... I had a GREAT weekend, meeting lots of fellow listees and baigls. Actually, it was the most AWESOME weekend of my life because i met both amy and emily, both together and at separate times, and i'll just reiterate what everyone else who has met them before has said - they are the sweetest, kindest, most down-to-earth people... i don't have the time, energy, or state of mind to describe it all - but i think the funniest part was driving down the streets of new haven, spotting amy going for a run, and asking her for directions for our hotel - WITHOUT letting on that i knew quite well who she was. very proud of myself. So shawn mullens was pretty cool, huh? Julie was SO awesome!! Anybody know if they have a web page or if there are any pics up of them? i'd love to see more... peace, ~flora Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 12:33:14 -0400 From: Marivel Danielson Subject: Dickenson stuff... Hey all! Well the mad roadtrippin' duo (well this half anyway...Deb? Are you out there???) is back home from Sunday and Monday's concerts in NY and PA. They were wonderful as y'all have heard. Everyone (band, crew, fellow concert goers) were soooo incredibly sweet. And I can hardly believe it's over for the moment. Ack! So I just wanted to post a few notes about the concerts before I forget, but i'll try not to repeat anything all the other great reviews have mentioned... OKay, so first thing's first. Soggy Carlisle. But worth every second. First time in a million years (okay more like 7 concerts) that I didn't get a setlist. But that's okay. I got a huge smile from someone special (ah!), and a bunch of great response to my signs and stuff. Oh, just so everyone knows, I declared last Sunday "Official Sulli Appreciation Day". Mark it on your calendars, send cards, spend your day doing "sulliesque" activities. She's so incredibly sweet. Does she know everyone's name? My goodness what a memory! Maybe not so much a great memory, but just the effort to make the details matter. Very cool woman. Very cool. So April 26th from now on. Don't forget! Alright, so I also held up a sign for Julie and Dave from Lift. Most everyone here knows the saga, so I won't rehash, but I thought it would be nice to let them know how much our huge group is supporting them regardless of the band's eventual fate. So my sign just said that Lift isn't gonna be Lift without them, and thanked them for the incredible memories of their 4 openers with the girls in NY. Honestly if you never saw these people play you missed something incredible, but it's still there. Whether it's backing Shawn Mullins or in some other setting. Anyone who's seen either of these two groups live will testify to that. And Julie asked me if she could keep my sign. First time I've ever had *that* request! Goodness if I'd known somebody was gonna want it I would have made it a little prettier. Oh well. Sentiment is what matters, and she and Dave both know we are all looking forward to more great music from them... Mmmm...what else? Well the crowd was excited as heck ("energizing" according to Amy). Did we ever get the complete setlist? I think so, but if not, and anyone wants it, I can write that up too. Can you believe Nashville? I was stunned. They must have been a little stunned as well, cause they had each had a copy of the lyrics taped to their amp speakers (well okay whatever those big speakers are that point towards them and away from the audience). I guess they were afraid of forgetting the words, but they did an incredible job on the song. I wonder what made them choose it for Carlise? Oh, and as a general consensus, I think we all adore the new/guest harmonica dude. Can't make out the name. Was he local? Okay, the fingernail thing. Amy spent a good part of the evening staring at her hand. So here's exactly what she said: "I've broken two fingernails already so this is a good show. I don't mean for you guys, but for us. Sorry. That sounded really egotistical. Alright, let's just really reverse that." >From there she breaks into World Falls. My question is this: Why is it >good for them and bad for us if she breaks two nails? I don't get the logic here. It was funny though, cause at least once she was so busy she didn't realize that Emily was going into a new song until she heard the opening chords. And once she held her hand out like she didn't know how she was going to play. But as with the downpours, it was overcome. Okay, Chickenman. Okay, right after one of the choruses they go into a guitar section and lately Amy has been making this great yell, like "Yip, yip". Very funny. The guitar solo that followed by Emily was amazing, as always. Then Dave. And seriously...this solo was good. Sometimes he seems like he gets himself into things he doesn't know what to do with later, but this one had direction and and interesting "pause, clap, clap, clap" thing from the crowd. And has anyone noticed that part towards the end when Amy's doing the chorus again, and Emily comes in behind her on the "I was looking for a car..."? Is she making it a little funkier lately? Both nights in PA and NY she sort of plays with the intonation and rythym and the so it's not the usual pauses (I went looking (pause) for a girl (pause) found a man) now it's more all mushed togther and sounds *really* great. Okay, Cut it Out. There's a part where Amy's just screaming into the mic. Right before they break into Wish You Were Here. Can anyone figure out what she's saying here? It's like "I'm so ________ now", or "I'm starting to get it now". Something like that. I can't figure it out, and believe me I've stared at her mouth as she says it a billion times. Can anyone help? Oh and later in the same song right as they are finishing Amy goes between "I wish you were here" and "Baby". And those "baby"s are so incredibly beautiful. I think maybe she used to do them far away from the microphone, but now she gets close enough that we can actually hear them. Galileo. Hee! Emily's screw up. Very sweet. She comes towards the mic while still finishing the solo and squeeks out "OOOPS!". Interesting accompaniment from the woman behind me. Veeeery interesting. Gone Again/Kakadu. Okay, I think I adore this song more than I have adored any song in eons. Love the funky twangy feel! Sooo happy I got to hear this one. And her whistling was impressive too. Even more so than the CTF part at the end. Okay I think that's it for Dickenson. I guess a semi-important note will follow this post regarding something y'all have been beggin' for for days. Keep a eye out... Marivel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 12:43:17 -0400 From: Marivel Danielson Subject: Re: Dickenson boot??? > WHO BOOTED DICKENSON!??! Me. But the recording leaves a little to be desired as far as sound quality, so if anyone feels like coming forward with a better copy, please feel free. Secondly, I am *still* finishing boot requests from early this year, and cannot possibly begin to take requests on this one until the others are out of the way. It should be a week or 2 at least, and then depending on the response I might decide to tree (despite the crappiness). So you must be asking yourself, "Gee, Marivel, what makes it so 'crappy'?". Well the acoustics sucked bigtime in the venue. It was a beautiful gym with high arched wood ceilings, but as far as sound goes it bit the big one (big what?). I just kept thinking about Amy's obsession with "muddiness" and sound quality, and trying to figure out why she didn't manage to get things a little better given the marathon sound check they had done while we stood in the rain. Okay too much info. Point is, I have a boot as a backup in case nothing else surfaces. It's not outstanding quality, but you can hear the music and if it's the only one out there, it's certainly worth listening to "Romeo!" being shouted every 2.5 seconds. But I'm not ready to offer it up now. I'll let y'all know, so just hang on for a few more days. Thanks... Marivel P.S. She gave me permission to post it and I thought those of you who were there would like to share it.
