wednesday night i went to the suffragette sessions w/ amy & emily from indigo girls, kate schellenbach from luscious jackson, gail ann dorsey (who was david bowie's bass player for years), josephine wiggs from the breeders, jane sibbery, lisa germano, jean smith from mecca normal, thalia zedek from come, & lourdes perez. it was such an amazing show! my friend, steph, waited on line all day, so we got first row center. i love being so close! shonen knife opened up, & they were pretty funny. they're 3 women from japan, & their english isn't perfect. many of their songs are about food, & they tend to say the same thing over & over. one went, "banana chips, banana chips, banana chips," another went "sushi bar, sushi bar, sushi bar," & another was about chinese dumplings. the suffragettes all picked a few songs of their own to play, & everyone rotated so at times, they were all playing & singing at once, but other times, only 2 or 3 people were playing. the ig songs were mystery, power of two (which was a completely *rocking* version! emily said we had to bounce like pogo sticks during it, so we jumped up & down for the whole song!), go (new amy song), sister (new amy song), & soon to be nothing (new emily song). the only other songs i knew were cannonball (the breeders), midnight train to georgia, & ziggy stardust (david bowie), but some of the other ones were great! jane & lisa have really nice piano folky songs, jean had very strange (& sometimes scary) spoken word pieces, gail played guitar, bass, & accordian & sang a couple great songs, kate played a mean set of drums, & lourdes sang beautiful songs in spanish. (she even did a verse of power of two in spanish!) oh, & thalia & josephine were great too! after the show, i got a pick & a setlist! i also bought a poster at the show, & we waited out back after the show, & i got sulli (ig's guitar tech), sara lee (who's played bass for ig, ani, b-52's, & others & played bass on 2 songs at the suff show), lourdes, jane, kate, josephine, jean, & thalia to sign it. overall, it was such a fun night! the setlist was: roll the dice cannonball go wood floors under your skin everwilling mystery gabrielle chez virtue tengo la vida pale light pushin or pullin soon to be nothing way below the radio cimmaron vestigos love is everything zigg stardust canada sister sister power of two midnight train to georgia here are some other reviews from the ig list: Date: Thu, 3 Sep 1998 17:09:36 EDT From: J K Subject: Philly review Hey all. Electric Factory is a great venue. It's a huge warehouse. Just lots of people walkin' around & stuff. It wasn't sold out. The crowd was really great, not rude or loud like I heard they were in Norfolk. My man right said Fred took me in the back door (woohoo)....didn't even need my tickets. Set list in no particular order: Roll The Dice Tengo La Vida Vestigios Power of 2 (Em said for everyone to jump up & down like pogo sticks) Mystery Pullin' A Cloud the new Gail Ann Dorsey tune....the name escapes me right now Ziggy Wood Floors Love Is Everything Way Below the Radio Soon to be Nothing Go Go Go (amy said this is kind of a new song) (thalia's verse kicked of course) Sister In Canada Chisel (possibly 1 more Jean Smith piece....don't recall) 3 count em yes 3 Thalia tunes: Gabrielle Pale Light Cimarron Under Your Skin Cannonball (Thalia & Amy doing moose sounds) Midnight Train to Georgia I may be forgetting something....I'm rushing.....gotta get to class. They said they're doin' a few extra songs 'cause they were taping. Jane Siberry thanked Amy & Em for puttin' everything together. She also called Lourdes Perez a beautiful latin being or something to that effect. Great show....friendly people. Nobody hounded them after the show at the buses. More later......... I don't have a set list or anything, sorry, but I just felt compelled to write in that this was simply the _best_ concert I've ever seen! You know from all the reviews how good the music was... It was so uplifting to be hearing all that wonderful stuff coming from a stage full of women! The crowd was even more overwhelmingly female than at most IG shows I've seen... it was amazing. I'm going to be on a natural high for days -- weeks even! I'd do _anything_ for a tape of this show, if anyone has one please let me know! (hey, that rhymes!) I happened to be at the Philly show (another long story). And I happened to be at the stage under Amy's feet. Now I can *almost* say that Amy did not have nail polish on for the first 1/3 of the show.. But when she was off stage with Jean Smith .. and then came back onstage for her part in another song, I did notice that Amy had on nail polish.. it wasn't blue, it was a coppery/brown/sparkle kinda color. And it was the same color Jean Smith was wearing. For the life of me I can't see any performer doing their nails between songs. But I guess anything is possible. more later kathleen<---who is still way high from the Philadelphia show Date: Fri, 4 Sep 1998 16:35:36 EDT From: Kathleen Mccrea Subject: Re: Philly review Opps, One other thing about Philadelphia Someone standing next to me yelled to Amy, "How 'bout a Suffragette CD" With that question, Amy turned slightly, gave a "you bet" look and motioned to us with a "thumbs up" sign. My thought: After reading the press about doing this tour on a shoestring, trying to make some money to pay the musicians, Why not release a CD where those involved might be able to reap a benefit. Amy is certainly in a position to put out a CD (as well as Jane Siberry). (she went on to ask Amy about her rec co.) Just had to mention that b/c I found it amusing ----> along withShonen Knife's Banana Chips and Sushi rolls---(thats what I made out of what they were saying!) Then why would they say they were singing a few extra because they were taping?! The Philly show was great, I'm so glad I passed on the Boathouse. The Boathouse crowd was just as rude during the demo tour, and it was a pretty lousy venue all around. The Electric Factory in Philly and the audience there were both excellent. And what a show! I don't recall ever seeing A & E have so much fun, I'd be surprised if this is the last such tour we see them do. And I owe some of you apologies about Jean Smith... I thought you were just close-minded, but she really does suck. :-) I have very eclectic music tastes (check out my music index for proof), but she seemed to me to be just a sad, screechy Patti Smith wannabe (sorry, Amy). She got such a cold reaction from the otherwise respectful and enthusiastic Philly crowd that Amy must've felt sorry for her... she sent her out to do another song at the start of the encore . Oh, and for those who might be wondering... this show was so loud, and I was so close, there was no chance of a listenable boot, sorry... -- Deb \\ indigo@mindspring.com \\ http://www.mindspring.com/~indigo
