I wrote this in Word & then cut & paste it into Telnet, but the quotes got all messed up. Sorry about that...I don't know how to fix it. I decided that my review wasnÕt as good as they usually are, so IÕm putting my review up here, but then IÕm putting MarivelÕs review after mine...she covered all the important stuff! I quote her in my review, so I technically should put hers first, but since itÕs my webpage, IÕm putting mine first. :) Date: Sat, 15 Nov 1997 04:30:52 -0500 From: Andi Subject: My Ann Arbor review... So I was all set to write out a great Ann Arbor review, but since I flew here to visit a friend (nice how it so conveniently coincided w/ an IG concert, huh? :), I felt bad e-mailing last night. But then Marivel wrote everything I was going to write! But seriously, Marivel, it was cool reading your post b/c it just brought back memories of the show. It was interesting seeing an IG concert w/ people who werenÕt huge fans. My friend & her roommates have a couple CDÕs & knew a lot of IG songs, but IÕm used to going w/ people who know every word to every song! Everyone I went w/ had never seen IG before (it was my 10th IG concert!), but they loved it! I also made them into huge Sonia fans b/c I played the Disappear Fear CD for them a few times yesterday. Speaking of Sonia, it was my first time seeing her live, & I loved her! I definitely recommend seeing her if you ever get the chance. I only have 2 DF CDÕs, & she played lots of stuff from the self-titled one, & nothing from Seeds in the Sahara. HereÕs the set list, or at least the songs I knew or ones she announced: Is There Anybody Here WhoÕs So Scared new song (something about feeling & love) ? (had da daÕs in the middle) Moment of Glory Love Insurance Sexual Telepathy Washington Work Song She said lots of cute things, like about how sheÕs used to playing in little places, not big places like that w/ lavender lights. And before Love Insurance, she explained that she thought that in a relationship, both people should have to put money in a pot, & then when one person broke up w/ the other, the other person could get the money. Before Washington Work Song, she said that she was in Washington DC the other day, & she played for a group of 200 people in wheelchairs, & she thought they were so much braver than she ever could be. She said that she was dragging around something on wheels recently, & she thought about how she couldnÕt get to so many places w/ it, & these people were always on wheels. So she dedicated that song to them. And during it, she changed on of the ŅWashingtonÕsÓ to ŅMichigan.Ó She was drinking Coke when she was up there too, which I just found funny. Okay, onto IG. They were in top form as usual! I suppose I should just add on to what Marivel wrote, b/c she covered everything really well. Marivel wrote (& from now on, whenever I use <<Ōs, itÕs referring to what she wrote): <> Yeah, I was in the 2nd row of the 1st balcony, & it wasnÕt too bad...it wasnÕt as cool as being on the floor, but I was surprised that I had as good of a view as I had. No oneÕs heads were in the way, so that was nice. And I had binoculars, so I could see pretty well. <> I noticed that too, but I thought A was saying, ŅItÕs too loud! ItÕs too loud!Ó to E. Of course, you were much closer, so IÕm probably wrong. That note was definitely a wrong one though. <> Oh, yeah...I have this one covered! A said, ŅYeah, but what we're wondering is are we at the point of diminishing returns?Ó Do I win a boot? :) <> I thought that AÕs pants were black, & my friend said she thought they were brown. Oh well...I suppose it doesnÕt much matter. A rolled up her sleeves too, & you could see her old tattoo. And her new one was peeking out of her shirt a little too. << And Emily had that rust-toned flowered shirt that kind of looks like photographs (I know...bad description) and jeans I think. >> E wasnÕt wearing jeans...I think they were black pants too. Maybe everything just looked black from where I was though! <> I think they all got hair cuts! AÕs was definitely shorter than the last time I saw them (Delaware), & even Jerry & Sara looked like they got theirs cut! Mark wrote: > 2 what was the cover amy and emily did after scooter boys i didnt > recognize the song was this a new one or a neil young song it was hard > rocking (if it was one of theirs after scooter then go to the nxt one( And then Marivel responded: <> I agree w/ Marivel. There was no new song or cover after SB...just a long SOC. So I guess that these are all of my fun & exciting comments from last night. It was a great show, but for some reason now, IÕm not as enthusiastic as I usually am. It was really cool to hear some songs I hadnÕt heard yet this tour like IA, DGTGAG, & HKF. And overall, I had a great time! :) Andi Date: Sat, 15 Nov 1997 03:09:52 -0500 From: Marivel Danielson Subject: Endless Ann Arbor post... Good evening all (or I guess good morning depending on what you all consider 3:08am)! Well I THOUGHT I was gonna be the first to post, but someone beat me to it while I was writing this insanely long post as I listened to the boot again. Yes I got a boot. I don't know how good the quality is. I'm just happy to have it on tape since I don't think a boot of last spring's Ann Arbor concert even exists (but hey, if I'm wrong and one of you has the boot of Ann Arbor 3/24/97 at (but hey, if I'm wrong and one of you has the boot of Ann Arbor 3/24/97 at Michigan Theater PLEASE let me know!!!) But alright, on with this post. Let's see...setlist (which the wonderfully sweet and thoughtful Emily *personally* handed to me after Closer to Fine!): 1. Three Hits 2. It's Alright 3. Shame on You 4. Get Out the Map 5. Don't Give that Girl a Gun 6. Least Complicated 7. Shed Your Skin 8. Love Will Come to You 9. Tried to be True 10. Power of Two 11. Scooter Boys 12. Leeds 13. Romeo and Juliet 14. Chickenman 15. Galileo =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1. Hey Kind Friend 2. Box of Tissues (with Sonia) 3. Closer to Fine ( " " ) Alright, now for the details...After Three Hits Amy and Emily both thanked us all for coming and seemed a little overwhelmed by the crowd (probably because they had had a few days off to live "normal" lives for a while. And after hitting a few questionable notes in this first song, Amy announced, "I was just thinking that I was choppin' wood yesterday and today I'm singin' out of tune." Then Emily said "Yeah, me too, but I was feeding my dog." And Amy looked over at her and with the most puzzled of expressions asked, "Feeding your dog???" I don't really get that. Like why would that be so strange to Amy that Em was feeding her puppy? Something we'll never know I guess. But enough obsessing over THIS minor detail. Off we go quickly my friends to yet another still more obscure and minute detail!!! DGTGaG was incredible as always. Sweat and saliva flying. And right before she does that new part ("Give that back...") she turned her head into her shoulder and just stayed there for a few seconds. I don't know if she was wipin' tears or sweat or spit, but it looked pretty dramatic...like she might not be able to finish, but she did and it was of course brilliant. She stepped away from the mic when she did these last few lines, and it didn't even seem like she cared what it sounded like at that point, she's was just singing, and whatever the mic happened to pick up, well then that's what was meant to be heard. I like that. The music came before the performance (which it usually does for both of them). Hmmm. Least Complicated was a "sing-a-long" as Emily always refers to it. We came in late on the repeat of the first verse and this made them laugh. But when we came in we were LOUD and this of course pleased them inmensly. The na na's were loud too. Maybe because of the organization of the venue. There was a main floor and 2 balconies. So there were people all the way up to the ceiling practically. I'm sure it helped our acoustics, but I felt so bad for all those poor souls stuck all the way up there near the light fixtures. Something happened in Shed Your Skin towards the middle. You know that part when Emily bends over and picks up that big black thing that she uses for the "slidy" part (someone technical PLEASE save me here). Well she picked it up and started playing, but instead of her usual electric solo, all that came out was one big long loud note that seemed beyond Em's control. At least that's how I'm interpreting it. If it was actually a really cool jammin' solo then someone who was there please correct me. Well anyway, Amy ran over to Emily when this note started filling the auditorium and they said something to each other and then Amy told Emily "I can't do it! I can't do it!" I don't know what that meant either, but there you have it. Then they finished and made their typical "That was a stupid one!" faces and went on to... Love Will Come to You! I love this song so much. It kind of set the tone for the whole show. Pretty mellow in my opinion. The audience was energetic and everything, but it just seemed pretty relaxed and calm compared to some other shows I've been to recently. Not that that's a bad thing! I don't know what they're saying here before Power of Two. Can anyone help me? Emily says "We were thinking that we were just here in in the springtime." And Amy says, "Yeah, but what we're wondering is..." Now if some kind soul can remember what the heck Amy says here...you'll win a lovely free copy of my AA boot (if you don't already have one). Anyone remember??? Scooter Boys. At one point the song appeared to end, but it turned out to be just Amy sort of taking a breather. She stopped for a second and the audience started applauding, and Emily even walked up to the her mic and said "yeah" like she was gettting ready to say "thanks y'all", but then Amy started playing again and went into her SOC about the Everglades and the driver that slipped away. And instead of the line about being worried about her fear, tonight she said "worried about my weight", and tonight it was "bane" rather than "blame" (for those keeping track!) Oh, Leeds. This was cute. Emily starts playing and gets through the first few chords, and then stops and looks out at us. Then starts again. Then stops and laughs and says, "I just realized I could play any chord on the piano and it doesn't have to be wrong". Then she played 2 really out of tune chords and looked out at the audience with this huge smile (I TRIED to get a picture!), and then on her 3rd chord she went right back into a beautiful version of Leeds. So there's a life lesson for you all from our own Ms. Saliers. Nothing is really wrong unless you say it is. I'm counting on this bit of wisdom to get me through a monster womens studies paper I have to write for next week! Chickenman. Well the first thing I noticed was that Dave (right?) the harmonica dude came out on stage before the song even started. I guess he wanted to avoid what happened at the Geneseo show (or maybe it was Geneva) when they got all the way to his first solo entrance and Amy turned around and freaked out cause he wasn't there. So they did a little improv and he finally emerged from the back of the stage. But that wasn't going to happened tonight...and both Amy and Emily seemed extremely impressed with his work in both of his solo sections. And while I'm on this topic...does anyone ever think of a hoe down (spelling?) when Amy is clapping along during the harmonica part. I swear she brings me back to all those Little House on the Prairie episodes with the fiddle and the swishy dresses. Oh, and far be it from me to leave out the fashion report. Amy was in one of the lovely stiped shirts from her Retro Ray collection (thick deep bluish purple stripes) and the same grey pants I've seen her in for 4 of the 5 shows I've been at these past few weeks. But who knows, maybe she just has eleven pairs of the exact same style. And Emily had that rust-toned flowered shirt that kind of looks like photographs (I know...bad description) and jeans I think. When I first saw Amy I could have sworn she had cut her hair, and come to think of it, Emily's looked a little flippy on the sides like maybe she took an inch or two off of it as well. Geez, I'm such a geek. I can't believe I'm actually writing this stuff! Sorry to be wasting bandwidth like this. Probably there were no haircuts. Just don't mind me... Oh, Amy called Hey Kind Friend "folk music". Box of Tissues. Amy informed us that this was Sonia's song. Beautiful and slow with Amy and Emily harmonizing angelically in the background. Oh if only the girls could do backup for everyone in the music industry! I'm never gonna get this out of my head--and I'm okay with that: "I'll sail away, I'll sail away..." During Closer to Fine Sonia stayed out and I guess was supposed to sing the last verse, but there was some confusion and they just kept playing the intro bars over and over and over again. So by the time everyone was pretty hysterically laughing she finally came in and with a little help from the rest of us finished the verse. Oh this part is for Deb. During Sonia's set Amy came out first and then Sulli and then Emily and then Sara. So they were all huddling behind some speakers with the Keifer look-a-like (Emily's guitar tech--Brett I think) and then Sulli went over to Sara and put her arm around her and turned to her and gave her the sweetest little kiss on the top of the head. I guess maybe it was a tough night or something. But you know this just confirms our assumption, Deb. Sulli IS the single sweetest being on earth (now if only it were YOUR head instead!). But a close second to Sulli is Emily who was nice enough to unstick her setlist from the floor and wait for me at the edge of the stage while I worked my way up so that she could make sure I got it. And Amy's done the same thing for me 3 other times, so she has to be VERY high up on this sweetness scale too. Obviously it has to be a three-way tie... And Sonia's set was good. I did get most of it booted, but I missed a song or 2 at the beginning cause I had to get to a bathroom to make sure my recorder was gonna run. She's really talented. Loud and strong and passionate. A lot of her boot turned out quite good considering the crappy $40 machine I'm working with. She sang something that was about "sexual telepathy" and mentioned how nice it was to be performing under lavender lights! Sorry I can't give you a setlist for her part of the show. I don't know her well enough to recognize songs, but if anyone really wants to hear this (ie. Karrie) give me a little shout and I'll dub it for you. Okay so that's about it. I waited for a few minutes outside by the buses but there were a million people and the bus was pulled right up to the door, so I gave up and came home to post. My only complaint on the night would be that they played that damn rubber tree song right after the concert ended, so I was TRYING to watch Sulli and catch a pick (with a "k" or without?) and I would find myself singing along with this stupid song. I'm sure I looked like a total idiot, but that's okay cause I got a setlist from Emily and a boot (well 2 really) and I couldn't ask for more. Except maybe to be at Dayton tomorrow. Sigh. Oh well. I fully expect all of you lucky listees that WILL be there to post excruciatingly detailed posts full of pointless obsession and awe. Okay? Thanks for listening... Marivel "Oh! Oh! Check. One, Two.
